Built AsiaCell, a mobile network in Northern Iraq. Asiacell, the first mobile telecommunications company in Iraq, was established in the city of Suleimaniah in 1999, Thus, with the company’s entry into an already quite advanced and competitive global market, it was ushering in a new era of telecommunications throughout the nation, while laying the groundwork for others to follow, In summary, it was the pioneer of mobile telecommunications in Iraq.

Ian’s role for Asia Cell was as a senior consultant reporting to parent company Wataniya on a weekly basis at board level. Project to build a new mobile network in Kurdistan, northern Iraq. Ian was responsible for a team of engineers. Areas of responsibility included the core network layer, SMS, GPRS, WAP gateways as well as the MMS service. Challenges also included Integrating SGSN/GGSN between Huawei and Siemens systems. This included creating the specifications for the hardware and software requirements, assessing vendors and ordering the equipment as well as working with sales and marketing to make sure the systems were meeting marketing needs.

 

Asia Cell needed a solution for ISP access for their customer base with circuit switch dial-up and GPRS connections.  Designed call center architecture using Cisco VoIP for voice traffic with selection of CRM system from COTS suppliers. Set-up IP routing back to the UK and USA via Satellite links.

Asia Cell staff required guidance with RAD development techniques for their own in-house development team to capture CDR information and other core network data streams.  Also provided consultancy on security issues and implementing them on Java SIMS.
